Max Galka, using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System, has created an interactive map that shows all traffic accident fatalities from 2004 through 2013 in Atlanta and the United States as a whole.
Max created the interactive map in order to help people visualize the severity of the statistics. A number like 373,377 – the number of people who died in a vehicle crash between 2004 and 2013 in the United States1 – is easy to dismiss. However, when presented in an interactive map with detailed information, the reality of the statistic is chilling.
The map itself includes several key data points: (a) gender, (b) whether the victim was a driver, passenger, pedestrian or bicyclist, (c) exact location of the accident and (d) contributing factors (such as alcohol, speeding and distracted driving).
The data reveals several alarming points: 2
- Dense urban areas tend to be more dangerous for pedestrians, while highways tend to be more dangerous for drivers.
- 58% of all fatal crashes involve either alcohol, speeding or distracted driving.
- Speeding is the single most common contributing factor in fatal accidents, followed closely by alcohol.
- The prevalence of distracted driving may not be accurately represented, due to the difficulty of establishing it as a definite contributing factor (compared to alcohol and speeding, which can be proven with blood tests, radar, forensics, etc.).
