Police arrested a suspected DUI driver on Saturday, July 4 following a three-car crash which left one person dead.
The crash occurred at the intersection of Moreland Ave and Memorial Drive in Southeast Atlanta. The alleged drunk driver was identified as Brandon Thomas. The crash, which occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m., happened when the alleged DUI driver who was driving on Moreland Ave ran a red light and collided with a Nissan Maxima which was westbound on Memorial Drive. The Nissan driver died at the scene and the female passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle.
Mr. Thomas was detained at the scene and then transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. Upon discharge from the hospital, Mr. Thomas will be transferred to the DeKalb County jail where he will be charged.
This crash is at least the third fatal collision in and around the city of Atlanta over the weekend. Before the weekend, I discussed the statistics regarding car crash fatalities over the holiday weekend. With the advent of so many alternate means of transportation, it is mind-boggling how many DUI arrests are made daily in Atlanta. There is no excuse for anyone, let alone a fatality caused by a DUI driver.
